A leading expert on longevity has suggested a simple dietary addition that could potentially lengthen your lifespan by four years. Dan Buettner, a 64-year-old National Geographic Fellow and renowned author, shared in a TikTok video the key to a longer life: beans.

According to Buettner, beans are the top longevity food worldwide and are a fundamental component of every blue zone diet. Consuming just one cup of cooked beans has been linked to an extra four years of life expectancy.

Buettner explained that beans offer numerous health benefits due to being a rich source of complex carbohydrates and fiber. He emphasized that beans are a valuable source of healthy protein, particularly in a society that tends to prioritize protein consumption.

Describing beans as “simple, affordable, and scientifically proven,” Buettner has dedicated years to studying different regions worldwide and identifying five ‘blue zones’ where individuals live the longest and healthiest lives.

His assertions align with the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 2020-2025, which highlight that beans, peas, and lentils are commonly underconsumed despite being part of both the vegetable and protein food groups.

Additionally, UCLA Health also supports the advantages of beans, noting that they are rich in essential nutrients such as potassium. Adequate potassium intake can help regulate blood pressure, counterbalancing the adverse effects of excessive sodium consumption, a deficiency common among many Americans.

Buettner offers Blue Zone recipes on his website, with one featuring Minestrone, a dish that incorporates beans. This recipe aims to assist individuals in integrating beans into their diets for improved health and longevity.
