Reform UK and the Conservative Party have been criticized by Sadiq Khan for their disapproval of London’s values. The Mayor of London accused both parties of opposing the city’s diversity, progressiveness, and success, as well as having an issue with a Muslim Mayor. During a speech at the Fabian Society’s annual conference, Mr. Khan called on his Labour colleagues to join him in promoting the advantages of immigration.
He warned about the rise of far-right populism and nativism, emphasizing the threat to the concept of a diverse, united, and prosperous society. Mr. Khan cited the White House’s ‘National Security Strategy’ claiming Europe is at risk of ‘civilisational erasure’ as an example of the concerning trend. He highlighted similar messages from far-right groups in Europe and criticized Reform and the Tories for portraying London in a negative light due to its diversity, progressiveness, and thriving nature, led by a Muslim Mayor.
In defense of London, Mr. Khan argued that critics are envious of the city’s success, which contradicts their worldview. He condemned the spread of false narratives, division of citizens for political gain, and fear-mongering tactics targeting immigrants. Emphasizing the positive impact of immigration, he stressed that migrants have contributed significantly to the city’s cultural richness and prosperity.
Mr. Khan concluded by urging for a positive narrative on immigration, stating that London’s vibrancy and achievements are proof of the benefits brought by generations of migrants and refugees.
