Michael van Gerwen criticized Michael Unterbuchner for not meeting his standards after a decisive 6-2 victory at the European Darts Grand Prix. Van Gerwen easily advanced to the round-of-16 by defeating Unterbuchner, who had made a light-hearted comment about facing him prior to the match.
Following his surprise win over William O’Connor in the first round, Unterbuchner jokingly remarked, “Michael van Gerwen? Who’s that? No, no, just kidding. I’m looking forward to it.”
Van Gerwen, a three-time world champion, did not take kindly to Unterbuchner’s remarks and stated after defeating the German, “He didn’t make a joke. He is one of those guys who try to be funny.”
“He’s never defeated me before, and he never will. He’s not at my level – even my lower-performing games can beat him, but it doesn’t matter. Onward to tomorrow,” added Van Gerwen.
Van Gerwen showcased his skills during the match, with an impressive average of 91 and executing a remarkable 102 checkout. His next opponent in the last-16 will be compatriot Jermaine Wattimena, who triumphed over Kevin Doets in an all-Dutch encounter.
Reflecting on his performance, Van Gerwen mentioned, “Who cares? I secured the win, and that’s what matters most. The audience is enjoying themselves – that’s all that counts. It’s been a while since I last won here, so hopefully, I can perform well tomorrow.”
Van Gerwen acknowledged his past success at the European Tour event, emphasizing the upcoming challenge against Wattimena. Meanwhile, Niko Springer caused a major upset by defeating defending champion Gary Anderson 6-3, setting up a match against Danny Noppert of the Netherlands.
Springer, elated with the victory, expressed, “It feels incredibly good. I have a lot of familiar faces here supporting me, which means a lot. The backing I received today was fantastic.”
