The co-founder of the renowned Australian rock band Midnight Oil, Rob Hirst, has passed away. The band announced his death on Tuesday, stating that he is now at peace. In a poignant message on their website, the band expressed that Rob had fought bravely for nearly three years before finding relief from his suffering.
Rob, aged 70, was a key member of the band known for their politically charged hits such as “Beds are Burning” and “The Dead Heart” from the successful 1987 album “Diesel and Dust.” Established in 1976 by Rob Hirst and guitarist Jim Moginie, Midnight Oil expanded with the addition of singer Peter Garrett, performing together until 2002.
Although the group was nominated for Grammy Awards in 1989 and 1991, they did not win. After disbanding in 2002, they reunited in 2016 until 2022. Jim Moginie described Rob as the driving force behind Midnight Oil, both on and off stage, in his 2024 memoir titled “The Silver River,” highlighting Rob’s wit, intelligence, and drumming prowess.
Rob had battled cancer, undergoing various treatments, and even auctioned a drum set used by Midnight Oil for fundraising to support struggling Australian musicians. Following his passing, tributes poured in from fans and fellow musicians like Jimmy Barnes and Hoodoo Gurus, praising Rob’s immense contribution to Australian culture and music.
The music community mourns the loss of a remarkable talent, remembering Rob Hirst as not only a phenomenal drummer but also a versatile musician.
