Sir Nick Faldo acknowledged Rory McIlroy as one of the greatest golfers in history but stopped short of declaring him the absolute best. McIlroy, aged 36, further solidified his status in golf by successfully defending his Masters title at Augusta on Sunday.
McIlroy’s final round score of one-under-par 71 was enough to surpass world No.1 Scottie Scheffler, securing his sixth major championship and joining an elite group of players who have won consecutive Masters titles, including Jack Nicklaus, Faldo, and Tiger Woods.
After last year’s victory that completed his career Grand Slam, McIlroy’s standing among golf’s elite was discussed by Faldo. The six-time major champion placed McIlroy above himself but noted that there are still golfing legends ahead of the Northern Irish star.
In an interview with The Times, Faldo praised McIlroy’s achievements, highlighting his 29 wins in America and ranking him fifth among all-time greats behind Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Nicklaus, and Woods. Reflecting on golf’s different eras, Faldo explained why he rates McIlroy above Gene Sarazen, emphasizing the significance of achieving the Grand Slam.
Faldo’s remarks from last year, suggesting that McIlroy’s first Masters win could propel him to further success, seemed prophetic as McIlroy clinched his second Masters victory. McIlroy, in his post-victory speech, expressed gratitude to his wife Erica Stoll and daughter Poppy for their unwavering support.
