An urgent warning has been issued to iPhone and Android users by O2 regarding a new scam targeting UK customers. The scam involves a message claiming that users’ SIM cards will be deactivated due to failure to accept updated Terms and Conditions. The message uses urgent language and appears to be sent from an official O2 number, making it harder to detect as a fake.
The message warns O2 users that their SIM cards will become inactive on a specific date if they do not sign the Terms and Conditions. It also includes a link to a fake website aimed at stealing personal information, which scammers may use to access accounts and exploit stolen passwords.
Customers are advised not to click on any links in messages claiming their O2 SIM is expiring. Instead, they should verify the message’s authenticity through the official O2 website or app or contact the network directly.
Murray Mackenzie, Director of Fraud Prevention at Virgin Media O2, highlighted the increasing sophistication of scammers in using convincing tactics to target victims. Virgin Media O2 is actively working to combat scams by blocking malicious texts and websites and enhancing fraud monitoring on online accounts.
O2 has shared tips to help customers protect themselves, including being cautious of urgent messages pressuring quick actions, avoiding unexpected messages from unknown numbers, refraining from clicking on links in suspicious texts, and changing passwords immediately if login details were entered on a suspicious link.
