The duration of awards for individuals initiating a new application for Personal Independence Payment (PIP) will be prolonged starting in April to address the backlog issue.
PIP serves as the primary disability benefit for individuals of working age in the UK. Qualification for PIP is based on the need for additional assistance with daily activities due to a health condition, disability, or mental health issue.
Eligibility for PIP is determined by how the condition impacts one’s daily life rather than the condition itself. Presently, PIP awards can last as briefly as nine months, but starting in April 2026, new PIP claimants aged 25 and above will have their award extended to a minimum of three years, potentially increasing to five years upon review if entitlement persists.
The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) stated that this change aims to enhance the efficiency of health professionals in conducting face-to-face assessments and conducting more reassessments.
These operational modifications are distinct from the Timms Review, which will evaluate the role of PIP, eligibility for daily living and mobility components, and the assessment process.
PIP consists of two components: the daily living and mobility components. The standard rate for daily living is £73.90 per week, with the higher rate at £110.40 per week. For mobility, the standard rate is £29.20 per week, and the higher rate is £77.05 per week. It is essential to inform the DWP if there are changes in health or condition.
Individuals who are terminally ill typically receive PIP automatically without needing an assessment. Under the special rules for terminal illness, the award is typically for three years before undergoing review.
PIP is accessible for individuals over 16 but below the state pension age. If PIP is claimed and the individual reaches state pension age, the claim typically continues. It may be feasible to apply for PIP at state pension age if eligible within the last 12 months.
Additionally, the PIP daily living rate and mobility rate are crucial factors to consider for those seeking PIP benefits.
