A tragic train accident in Spain has resulted in the loss of 21 lives, with numerous passengers en route to Madrid sustaining injuries following a derailment incident. The death toll has climbed to 21, with an additional 25 individuals critically wounded as a train veered off the tracks in Andalusia on Sunday, January 18.
The incident involved an Iryo train departing from Malaga carrying about 300 passengers, which derailed onto an adjacent track, leading to a collision with another train traveling from Madrid to Huelva. This collision caused both trains to derail, leaving one carriage overturned on the tracks, as depicted in distressing images from the scene.
Eyewitnesses reported passengers frantically escaping through shattered windows, while injured individuals sought refuge on the sidelines of the tracks. Emergency protocols were swiftly activated, with an emergency command center set up at Adamuz by the region’s Interior Minister. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez expressed deep concern over the situation, emphasizing the government’s collaboration with relevant authorities and emergency services to aid the affected passengers.
As a precautionary measure, all high-speed train services between Madrid and Andalusia have been suspended to facilitate emergency response efforts. ADIF announced the suspension of rail services in several key cities, including Madrid, Cordoba, Seville, Malaga, and Huelva, at least until the following day.
Iryo, the high-speed train operator, conveyed regret over the incident and confirmed the activation of all emergency procedures. The country’s Transport Minister, Oscar Puente, described the collision as “very serious,” highlighting the need to prioritize victim assistance amid the ongoing rescue operations.
