Tory politician Robert Jenrick, known for switching sides, reportedly had a media strategy in place when he joined Reform UK, labeling himself as the “new sheriff in town.” The leaked plan also claimed that his move would be the most significant defection story for Nigel Farage’s party. This strategy was exposed after Kemi Badenoch removed Jenrick from her Shadow Cabinet upon learning about his defection intentions.
Previously mocked as “Robert Generic,” the veteran Conservative Member of Parliament swiftly joined Reform UK following his departure. Internal documents from Jenrick’s team, obtained by Badenoch, indicated that he was planning to defect imminently.
The documents hailed Jenrick as a pivotal figure for Reform UK, describing him as a potential leader and a valuable asset for the party’s operations. They emphasized his role as a supporter of Nigel Farage, portraying him as a seasoned political figure ready to contribute his expertise to the party.
A source close to Jenrick denied his involvement in drafting the leaked document. Jenrick’s spokesperson clarified that he was part of Farage’s team to aid in the pursuit of becoming prime minister, highlighting Reform UK’s commitment to instigating change in the country.
In response to these defections, Tracy Brabin, the Labour Mayor of West Yorkshire, characterized Reform UK as a sanctuary for disillusioned Tories who feel marginalized within the Conservative Party. The party has also celebrated a defection from the Labour Party recently, prompting reactions from Labour politicians like Lisa Nandy, who humorously dismissed any potential involvement.
Nandy refrained from speculating on Farage potentially leading a fascist government if victorious, stressing the importance of avoiding divisive labels. She underscored the need for unity and vigilance against divisive forces, alluding to the significance of recognizing and addressing potential threats.
