The parents of a nine-month-old child who tragically lost her life while in nursery care are advocating for critical reforms in the childcare sector. John and Katie Meehan, who are grieving the loss of their daughter Genevieve, commonly known as “Gigi”, in May 2022, are set to deliver a letter to Downing Street, stressing to Keir Starmer the urgency of addressing the issue without delay. Gigi passed away in a nursery in Cheadle Hulme, Greater Manchester, where she was placed face-down, tightly swaddled, and on a bean bag, leading to her suffocation. Subsequently, nursery worker Kate Roughley was sentenced to 14 years in prison for manslaughter.

Expressing their profound sorrow and frustration, John shared with The Mirror the heart-wrenching experience of dropping off a living child at nursery only to receive a devastating call later informing them of her passing. The Meehans initiated the “Campaign for Gigi” last year, advocating for clear statutory safer sleep regulations, unannounced and more frequent Ofsted inspections, and mandatory CCTV installation in nurseries. John emphasized that these campaign objectives do not necessitate significant funding or deliberation but are straightforward and essential measures.

Katie raised concerns about potential negligence stemming from financial constraints, emphasizing that the safety of children should never be compromised. Describing Gigi as a joyful child with an infectious smile, Katie highlighted the need for meaningful change to prevent similar tragedies from recurring, emphasizing the importance of honoring Gigi’s memory by ensuring the safety of all children.

Referencing other distressing incidents in nurseries, including the case of Noah Sibanda and the abhorrent actions of individuals like Vincent Chan and Roksana Lecka, Katie underscored the critical need for immediate action to safeguard children in childcare settings. John conveyed a powerful message to Keir Starmer, urging prompt action and prioritization of children’s safety to prevent future tragedies.

Tom Morrison, the Liberal Democrat MP for Cheadle, expressed a mix of sorrow and frustration over the lack of progress in enhancing nursery safety since Gigi’s untimely death. He emphasized the necessity of implementing robust safety standards in nurseries to prevent such devastating incidents, echoing the Meehan’s calls for urgent reforms.

In response, Early Education Minister Olivia Bailey acknowledged Gigi’s tragic passing as a preventable catastrophe and outlined ongoing efforts to bolster safeguarding measures in early years education. The government is actively working on enhancing safeguarding protocols, including more rigorous inspections, clearer guidelines on CCTV usage, and improved sleep safety requirements, in collaboration with relevant stakeholders.

The Meehans’ unwavering advocacy for nursery safety reforms continues to resonate with policymakers and the public, underscoring the imperative of prioritizing child welfare in childcare settings.
