Keir Starmer is set to address the public in an urgent press conference at Downing Street today following Donald Trump’s recent tariff threats in response to the Greenland issue. The move comes after several NATO countries, including the UK, cautioned the US President about the potential negative impact his actions could have on international relations. A joint statement issued by these nations emphasized their unity and support for Denmark and Greenland.

President Trump’s unpredictable behavior led to his announcement of imposing 10% tariffs on countries, including the UK, for opposing his attempts to acquire Greenland. Furthermore, he warned of increasing tariffs on NATO allies to 25% by June 1 if a deal for the Greenland purchase is not finalized.

In a rare public denouncement of the US President, Keir Starmer criticized Trump’s actions over the weekend, prompting a delay in the Prime Minister’s scheduled speech focusing on cost of living issues. Instead, Starmer is expected to address the recent global developments in a press conference from Downing Street with a focus on the UK’s collaboration with allies and safeguarding the security and well-being of the British population.

The statement issued by Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, and the UK expressed commitment to Arctic security as a shared interest and solidarity with Denmark and Greenland. The countries highlighted the importance of sovereignty and territorial integrity, emphasizing their dedication to upholding these principles.

While some, including opposition leader Sir Ed Davey and Tory MP Simon Hoare, have called for the cancellation of the upcoming state visit to the US if tariffs are imposed, Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy reiterated the UK’s unwavering stance on Greenland. Nandy emphasized the UK’s position on the matter but also stressed the importance of maintaining a cooperative approach with the US.

Amid escalating tensions, EU ambassadors were summoned for urgent discussions regarding the US President’s tariff threats. The situation continues to evolve, with global leaders navigating diplomatic challenges in response to Trump’s controversial actions.
