Shamima Begum may soon find herself released from a detention facility in Syria amidst ongoing violent clashes in the northeastern region. The 26-year-old, who departed the UK in 2015 at the age of 15 to align with ISIS, had her British citizenship revoked and is currently situated in the al-Roj camp in the area.

The Syrian government has declared a ceasefire with the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), gaining substantial control over the country and disbanding the Kurdish-led forces that governed the northeast for over a decade. This development follows escalating tensions between government troops and the SDF earlier this month, culminating in a significant eastward offensive.

Concerns have arisen regarding the government’s attempts to seize prisons in the region, with the SDF warning of potential security risks that could destabilize the area and facilitate a resurgence of chaos and terrorism. According to The Telegraph, approximately 10 British men, 20 women, and 40 children are currently held in these facilities.

In a separate legal maneuver, Begum’s lawyers have filed an appeal with the European Court of Human Rights, seeking clarifications from Britain regarding the citizenship revocation.

Begum, who departed the UK at 15 and had her citizenship stripped in February 2019 due to concerns about posing a national security threat after being married to an IS combatant, is challenging the decision under Article 4 of the European Convention on Human Rights, which prohibits slavery and forced labor.

The case was lodged in December 2024 after she was denied the opportunity to contest the citizenship revocation at the UK’s Supreme Court. Questions posed by judges in Strasbourg to the Home Office include whether the Secretary of State had an obligation under the Convention to consider any trafficking victim status before stripping her citizenship.

In response to these legal developments, Birnberg Peirce Solicitors, representing Begum, emphasized the significance of the court’s communication as an opportunity to address critical aspects overlooked by previous UK administrations regarding her case.

Former attorney general Dominic Grieve has asserted that Begum falls under the UK’s jurisdiction. A Government source reiterated the Home Secretary’s readiness to defend the decision to revoke Begum’s citizenship, emphasizing the government’s commitment to prioritizing national security.

Following initial confrontations in eastern Aleppo province, the SDF has largely withdrawn in the wake of a ceasefire announcement by Syria’s Defence Ministry, signaling a pause in frontline hostilities.

Since the overthrow of Bashar Assad in December 2024, Syria’s new leadership has faced challenges in asserting full control over the war-torn nation. A merger agreement between the SDF and Damascus reached in March has encountered obstacles as both sides accuse each other of violating the terms.

The government has made significant strides in securing key territories under the SDF, including the Deir el-Zour and Raqqa provinces, encompassing vital assets such as oil and gas fields, river dams along the Euphrates, and border crossings.
