Energy bills are expected to decrease for many households this spring following the announcement of a new price cap by Ofgem. Starting April 1, the price cap will drop from £1,758 to £1,641 for the average household, marking a 7% reduction of £117. However, the actual savings will vary based on individual energy usage.

The reduction in energy costs is attributed to initiatives introduced by the Government in the last autumn Budget. Chancellor Rachel Reeves disclosed that energy bills would see a £150 cut starting April due to the removal of the Energy Company Obligation and Renewables Obligation.

Despite some additional charges like network maintenance and slight increases in wholesale prices, the price cap adjustment by Ofgem will remain effective until June 30, with further revisions expected thereafter. Consumers are advised to explore fixed tariff deals to maximize savings. By switching to a fixed tariff, households could potentially save up to 19% compared to standard rates.

Ofgem’s focus is on managing controllable costs and fostering competition in the energy market for long-term stability. The price cap sets limits on unit rates and standing charges rather than overall energy costs. The recent adjustments will apply to both standard variable rate and fixed rate customers, with significant potential savings for those on fixed deals.

Wholesale energy prices, infrastructure maintenance, operational expenses, and other factors influence energy bills. Ofgem will announce the next price cap by May 27, 2026, with forecasts indicating a relatively stable cap in the near future. Dr. Craig Lowrey from Cornwall Insight emphasized the importance of sustaining cost reductions amid ongoing investments in energy infrastructure for a secure and resilient energy system.
