Kemi Badenoch expressed gratitude towards Nigel Farage for assisting in what she referred to as her “spring cleaning,” following the decision of former Conservative member Robert Jenrick to join Reform UK.
Badenoch’s appreciation came after she learned of Jenrick’s intention to switch parties and subsequently removed him from the Shadow Cabinet on Thursday amidst a day filled with remarkable political developments. Nigel Farage welcomed the 24th former Tory MP into the ranks of his party, despite previously criticizing Jenrick as insincere and lacking in principles.
In various interviews today, Badenoch accused the former Shadow Justice Secretary of being untruthful, stating that his words could not be trusted. When pressed on whether Jenrick could be considered a traitor, Badenoch responded by stating that he was now Farage’s concern, not hers.
She expressed satisfaction with Farage taking on the task of “spring cleaning” for her, mentioning that the issues within the Conservative Party were being redirected to Reform. Despite suggestions that she was downplaying the impact of Jenrick’s defection, Badenoch insisted that the public was uninterested in the internal conflicts within the Tory party.
Commenting on the situation, Labour minister Pat McFadden remarked on the turmoil and disorder within the right-wing political spectrum, comparing it to the chaotic period during the Conservative government’s reign.
Rachel Reeves, the Chancellor, also weighed in on the matter, cautioning against taking Farage’s claims about a potential Labour defection lightly. Reeves advised being skeptical of Farage’s statements, emphasizing the need to approach such declarations with caution.
