The World Snooker Championship has secured its future at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield until at least 2045 following a significant agreement between the World Snooker Tour and Sheffield City Council. Discussions had hinted at the potential relocation of the event due to outdated facilities and limited seating capacity, accommodating only 980 spectators per session in the Steel City.

To address these concerns, extensive renovations costing £45 million are planned to increase seating capacity by up to 500 seats, ensuring the longevity of snooker’s premier tournament at its traditional venue. Since its inception in 1977, the Crucible has attracted audiences globally each spring for the prestigious event.

The Championship will continue at the Crucible in its current layout for the next three tournaments before undergoing refurbishments post the 2028 edition. During the renovation phase, the event will temporarily shift to an alternate location before returning to the revitalized theatre.

Subsequently, the Championship is set to remain at the Crucible until at least 2045, with the possibility of extending the deal until 2050. This agreement puts an end to years of speculation, with snooker chief Barry Hearn expressing his satisfaction in finalizing the deal.

Barry Hearn remarked, “The Crucible holds a special place in my heart after over 50 years of promoting sports worldwide. I am thrilled that we have reached an agreement to host the World Championship at its historic home – the Crucible. I extend my gratitude to Sheffield City Council for their dedication to preserving this esteemed tournament at its spiritual abode.”

Additionally, Prime Minister Keir Starmer played a role in securing the Championship’s tenure at the Crucible, recently visiting Sheffield to facilitate discussions among stakeholders, ensuring the event’s sustained presence in the city’s cultural landscape.

Keir Starmer stated, “The UK has a rich cultural and sporting legacy, embodying the very best of us through sports, arts, and culture. This heritage instills pride not only in our nation but also in the communities we hail from. Following my visit to Sheffield, the home of the world’s oldest football club, I am delighted by today’s confirmation that the Crucible Theatre and the city will continue to host the illustrious World Snooker Championships for years to come.”

Renowned snooker figure and BBC commentator Stephen Hendry emphasized the unique ambiance and historical significance of the Crucible, expressing his delight in the long-term agreement to keep the event at this iconic venue.

The upcoming World Championship is slated to commence on April 18, culminating on May 4, with the champion receiving a £500,000 prize. Zhao Xintong from China holds the current title, while Ronnie O’Sullivan aims to secure an unprecedented eighth championship victory.
