Adam Henson, known for his role in Countryfile, has expressed concerns about viewers becoming disinterested in the show. The 60-year-old has been the face of the popular BBC One series for nearly 25 years while also managing Bemborough Farm near Guiting Power, which also operates as Cotswolds Park Farm and attracts approximately 180,000 visitors annually.
The farm, originally established by Adam’s father Joe in 1971, came under Adam’s management in 1999 when he partnered with Duncan Andrews. Despite his deep understanding of rural life, Adam acknowledged that he sometimes simplifies farming discussions on Countryfile, which can lead to certain viewers feeling frustrated.
During a FarmED podcast episode in December, Adam addressed the mixed reactions he receives from viewers. He emphasized that Countryfile aims to cover a wide range of topics related to the countryside rather than solely focusing on farming, which has caused some farmers to feel that British farming is not adequately championed on the show.
Adam drew comparisons to the format of popular shows like The Great British Bake Off, underscoring that Countryfile remains the most-watched factual program on television. He revealed the challenges of simplifying farming terminology to ensure broader audience comprehension, recognizing that this balancing act can alienate some farming viewers.
Despite facing criticism from farmers for his approach, Adam stressed the importance of maintaining impartiality as a presenter on Countryfile. He highlighted the diverse audience the show caters to, ranging from countryside residents to urban dwellers, and noted the necessity of presenting content that appeals to a wide spectrum of viewers.
Adam is scheduled to host the upcoming episode of Countryfile on BBC One, where he will engage with communities seeking to preserve Devon’s Exe Estuary and visit a new nature reserve. The episode airs tonight at 6pm alongside co-presenter Charlotte Smith.
