Maxwell McKnight, a determined young man expected to graduate with top honors in business management, has defied odds since being diagnosed with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) at the age of two, the same condition as the twins of former Little Mix star Jesy Nelson. In 2024, he made history by becoming the first wheelchair user to conquer Snowdon, raising a remarkable £50,000 for the charity SMA UK.
Reflecting on this achievement, Maxwell described the climb as one of the most challenging yet exhilarating experiences of his life. In a heartfelt video message to Jesy, he shared words of encouragement, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a positive mindset in the face of adversities associated with disabilities.
Despite initial grim predictions, Maxwell, now 21, has exceeded expectations and actively advocates for including SMA screening in the NHS newborn heel prick test. He emphasized that early detection through this simple and cost-effective measure could significantly improve outcomes for children born with SMA, potentially saving lives and reducing long-term healthcare costs.
Maxwell’s journey, marked by milestones and challenges, underscores his resilience and unwavering spirit. Supported by his devoted parents and sister, he navigates daily life with SMA, relying on specialized equipment and care while pursuing his aspirations. As a trustee of Caudwell Children, a charity dedicated to supporting disabled children, Maxwell remains focused on his goals, aiming to raise awareness of SMA and achieve further milestones in the future.
