Britain’s Foreign Secretary has expressed readiness to support allies in intercepting Russian shadow vessels that are financing Vladimir Putin’s military operations. Yvette Cooper emphasized the need to crack down on Russia’s clandestine fleet, consisting of deteriorating oil tankers operating under false identities to avoid sanctions. These vessels are channeling funds to the Kremlin for the conflict in Ukraine and causing harm to vital undersea cables.
Recent joint efforts between British and American forces resulted in the seizure of a tanker linked to Russia, suspected of violating oil sanctions in Venezuela. While British personnel have not yet boarded these ships, there is ongoing assessment of the legal framework for potential military intervention.
During a visit to Helsinki, Ms. Cooper met with members of the Finnish Border Guard who are actively defending against Russian threats along the extensive Finnish border. The Turva patrol ship was involved in a high-profile operation targeting a Russia-linked vessel accused of sabotaging undersea cables in the Gulf of Finland.
Ms. Cooper highlighted the necessity for more decisive action against the shadow fleet, including the possibility of seizing ships, to halt the flow of Russian oil revenue to Moscow. The UK is closely monitoring enforcement actions by European partners against illicit vessels, particularly in Baltic and French waters.
In response to increased Russian presence near the UK, Ms. Cooper reaffirmed the commitment to intensify measures against the shadow fleet and Putin’s activities. The Foreign Secretary also engaged in discussions with Finland’s President Alexander Stubb, focusing on security issues in the Arctic region, amid concerns raised by President Trump’s statements regarding Greenland.
The escalating tensions underscore the importance of international cooperation to counter Russian aggression and safeguard national security interests.
