Greenland’s minister expresses the feeling of betrayal among the island’s residents towards the US and calls for a peaceful resolution. Naaja Nathanielsen, the minister responsible for business in the region, conveyed that discussions had occurred with allies to prepare for a potential invasion by Donald Trump. She emphasized the need for additional NATO forces on the island as a defense against threats from Russia and China.
Ms. Nathanielsen highlighted the anxiety caused by Trump’s invasion threats and commended the resolute stance of Britain and European allies. She emphasized the pursuit of a peaceful resolution, advocating for friendship and alliance over conflict. When questioned about potential NATO support during an invasion, she emphasized the collective nature of any attack impacting all NATO members.
Regarding the impact on the island’s population, she described a state of fear and sleeplessness among the people, expressing bewilderment at the unfolding situation. In response to Trump’s recent escalations, she acknowledged the concerns within Greenland about the intentions behind his interest in the region.
The minister expressed feelings of betrayal and offense towards the US rhetoric, contrasting it with the support Greenland has shown for American values. Despite these challenges, she acknowledged the solidarity shown by countries like the UK, France, and Germany in support of Greenland and Denmark.
US Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio are scheduled to meet with the foreign ministers of Denmark and Greenland to address Trump’s pursuit of acquiring Greenland. This meeting follows Greenland’s Prime Minister’s assertion that the island is not for sale and does not wish to become a US possession.
Trump’s claims of needing to “take Greenland” to prevent Russia or China from doing so have heightened tensions and raised concerns among the international community.
