The cost of the TV licence is increasing once again, but if you no longer require one, you may be eligible for a refund.

The current annual fee for a TV licence is £174.50, which will rise to £180 starting in April. A TV licence is necessary for watching or recording live TV, as well as for viewing any content, whether live or catch-up, on BBC iPlayer.

If your viewing is limited to catch-up shows on streaming platforms other than BBC iPlayer, such as Netflix, Amazon Prime, ITVX, Disney Plus, YouTube, All 4, or My5, then a TV licence is not required. However, if you access live programs through these services, you will need a TV licence. Failure to comply could result in a fine of up to £1,000 for watching TV programs that mandate a TV licence.

Should you no longer require your TV licence before it expires, you may be entitled to a refund if there is at least one month remaining on it. Additionally, if you qualify for an over 75 or blind concession, you can also request a refund. Non-compliance with TV licence regulations could lead to a fine of up to £1,000.
