Denmark’s foreign minister has stated that Donald Trump is still determined to acquire Greenland following an important meeting that did not result in the US gaining control of the territory. The meeting involved Denmark’s foreign minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen, Greenland’s foreign minister Vivian Motzfeldt, and key US officials such as Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
Tensions over the ownership of Greenland, which the US claims is crucial for national security reasons, have escalated as European allies plan to participate in a joint troop mission to Greenland in support of Denmark.
Rasmussen acknowledged that more discussions were necessary to reach a mutual agreement, indicating that further talks would take place in the upcoming weeks after the recent unsuccessful negotiations with the Trump administration.
President Trump is advocating for the takeover of Greenland citing its strategic location, valuable mineral resources, and increased military activities by Russia and China in the surrounding region.
Concerns have been raised among European nations following Trump’s warnings of potential US invasion of Greenland, particularly in light of recent US actions in Venezuela.
After the meeting, Rasmussen emphasized that it is evident the president desires to acquire Greenland, despite clear opposition from the kingdom. The UK and US have initiated the evacuation of essential personnel from key Middle East bases amid preparations for potential conflicts with Iran.
Air raid drills were conducted at the primary al-Udeid base in Qatar, utilized by British and American forces, with personnel moved to secure locations in anticipation of possible retaliatory actions following Trump’s strong remarks regarding protests in Iran.
Additionally, the UK withdrew its diplomats from Iran on Wednesday night as a precautionary measure based on security assessments. The British Embassy in Tehran has temporarily closed, operating remotely, with updated travel advisories issued by the Foreign Office.
