A recent report from consumer group Which? reveals that the major mobile networks, EE, Vodafone, Three, and O2, are falling behind smaller competitors in terms of overall performance. The report, based on a survey of over 5,000 smartphone users nationwide, indicates that lesser-known networks often offer better value and superior customer service.

Which? conducted the survey to assess which providers are meeting customer expectations. The results indicate that the prominent “Big Four” networks are trailing many smaller rivals in performance metrics.

Talkmobile secured the top position in the rankings, followed by Tesco Mobile, Giffgaff, and SMARTY. Among the major providers, EE performed the best, ranking ninth, while O2 and Three were among the lowest-rated networks.

Price emerged as a significant factor in the report, with the Big Four customers paying an average of £16 per month for a SIM-only deal, compared to just £9 for users on smaller networks. Despite the lower prices, many smaller providers utilize the major networks’ infrastructure, ensuring comparable signal quality without the premium costs associated with renowned brands.

Switching between networks is simpler than perceived, with some customers able to transition in as little as 10 minutes. For instance, a Which? member shared their experience of leaving O2 due to a price increase and switching to a cheaper SMARTY plan within minutes, saving around £200 annually.

Natalie Hitchins, Head of Home Products and Services at Which?, highlighted that smaller providers consistently outshine larger mobile firms by offering better customer service and cost-effective deals. She encouraged customers unhappy with their current service or seeking cost savings to consider switching to providers offering better value.
