President Donald Trump criticized NATO allies in a brief statement while also escalating his rhetoric about potentially acquiring Greenland.

In a recent exchange with reporters onboard Air Force One, the outspoken US leader reiterated his intention to take control of the Danish territory, even if it meant jeopardizing the alliance with NATO. Trump emphasized that the alliance’s reliance on the US was greater than vice versa, suggesting a lopsided relationship.

Despite widespread opposition from the majority of Greenlanders who prefer independence or Danish affiliation, the Trump administration remains steadfast in its pursuit of Greenland. A survey conducted in January 2025 indicated that only a small percentage of Greenland’s population favored joining the US.

Defending his stance, Trump argued that Greenland should agree to the deal to prevent potential takeovers by Russia or China. He made unfounded claims about Denmark’s defense capabilities, asserting they only had “two dogsleds.”

Expressing confidence in US control over Greenland, the president declared that it was a necessary strategic move to thwart competing interests from other global powers. Trump asserted that securing Greenland was crucial to prevent rival nations from gaining a foothold in the region.

Questioning the mutual defense commitment within NATO, Trump raised doubts about the alliance’s willingness to support the US in times of crisis. He pondered the reliability of NATO members in coming to America’s aid, highlighting his concerns about the alliance’s commitment.

Contrary to Trump’s assertions, NATO members, including the UK and Denmark, have historically demonstrated solidarity with the US, particularly during events like the 9/11 attacks. The invocation of Article 5 following the attacks underscored the collective defense principle of the alliance.

The Trump administration’s controversial statements have sparked concerns both in Europe and the US, with fears of strained relations with longstanding allies. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced plans to engage in discussions with Danish officials regarding the Greenland issue, while European leaders emphasized the significance of local autonomy and Danish sovereignty over the territory.
