Vladyslav Heraskevych from Ukraine has been disqualified from the Winter Olympics by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for attempting to wear his ‘helmet of memory’. Heraskevych, a skeleton pilot, brought a custom-made helmet to Milano Cortina that features images of 24 Ukrainian athletes who lost their lives due to Russia’s invasion.
During a training session, the 27-year-old defied instructions and wore the helmet. Despite his appeal to the IOC, the committee deemed the helmet a political statement, resulting in Heraskevych’s disqualification and revocation of his Olympics accreditation.
Heraskevych expressed that not wearing the helmet would be a betrayal to the athletes. He intends to appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, stating, “It’s hard to express in words. It’s an emptiness. This is the price of our dignity.”
His father and coach, Mykhailo, was visibly emotional upon hearing the news at the venue in Corina d’Ampezzo. The IOC justified its decision by citing Heraskevych’s non-compliance with the Guidelines on Athlete Expression.
“Despite numerous discussions and meetings with the IOC, including one with IOC president Kirsty Coventry, Heraskevych remained uncompromising. The IOC was eager for him to compete,” stated the IOC in a release.
Coventry, a Zimbabwean politician, traveled to Cortina for face-to-face discussions with Heraskevych. “I felt it was crucial to engage in direct dialogue with him,” Coventry expressed.
Heraskevych, with little time before the competition, urged the IOC to reverse the ban and issue an apology. “I never sought a confrontation with the IOC; they have created it through their interpretation of the rules, seen by many as discriminatory,” he argued.
Despite his plea, the IOC declined to reconsider, stating, “Mourning is expressed differently across the world.”
