The UK is set to experience more unsettled weather before a potential ‘Beast from the East’ storm hits, as per forecasters’ warnings. Following the recent impact of deadly Storm Goretti, several regions are under new yellow weather warnings issued by the Met Office. Heavy rain is expected to cause widespread disruption and potential flooding in different areas, including the south coast of England and South Wales.
Locations such as Plymouth, Exeter, Brighton, Bristol, Yeovil, Swansea, and Cardiff are covered by the yellow alert, with rainfall amounts ranging from 20mm to 40mm anticipated. The Met Office Deputy Chief Meteorologist, Dan Holley, highlighted the approaching low-pressure system bringing heavy rain and possible strong winds across the UK on Thursday.
The uncertain track of the low-pressure system may result in isolated areas receiving up to 70mm of rain, particularly in parts of southwest England. Additionally, there is a chance of brief snowfall in higher elevated regions in the north and west due to colder air interacting with the low-pressure system.
Moreover, weather experts are cautioning about similarities between current weather patterns and those that led to the severe ‘Beast from the East’ winter storm in 2018. Models suggest a potential significant snow event approaching the British Isles in the coming days, reminiscent of the past catastrophic storm that claimed lives in the UK and abroad.
Projections indicate a drop in temperatures on Sunday, with lows of -4C in the south and as low as -10C in the north. Wednesday is expected to be mostly cloudy with some light rain in the southeast region. Daytime maximum temperatures are forecasted to reach 9C in London, 7C in Cardiff and Belfast, 6C in Edinburgh, and 5C in Manchester.
Overall, the weather outlook suggests varying conditions with rain and strong winds, especially on Thursday night. While temperatures will be around average in the south, the north is expected to be colder. Sunny intervals and showers are more likely from Friday onwards.
