A widely consumed fruit priced at just 95p may aid in reducing cholesterol levels within a span of four weeks. Health experts have endorsed the consumption of aubergines for their positive impact on health.

High cholesterol signifies an excess of a fatty substance known as cholesterol circulating in the blood. Although not an immediate threat, prolonged high levels can result in arterial stiffening and constriction, increasing the risk of heart-related and cerebrovascular incidents.

The management of cholesterol is significantly influenced by dietary choices, as foods high in saturated fats are known to elevate cholesterol levels. Conversely, certain foods can have the opposite effect.

Despite being commonly prepared and consumed like vegetables, aubergines, also known as eggplants, are botanically classified as fruits. Cheryl Lythgoe, a matron at Benenden Health, shared with Express.co.uk that aubergines are a flavorful vegetable that can be easily incorporated into many favorite dishes.

“The vegetable contains antioxidants that may help lower ‘bad’ cholesterol. Additionally, it is a rich source of fiber and essential nutrients that can bolster the immune system and brain function.”

This recommendation is supported by the cardiovascular health charity Heart UK, which advocates for the consumption of aubergines due to their fiber content. According to the charity, aubergines block the absorption of some cholesterol from the intestines into the bloodstream.

Research published in the journal of the Brazilian Society of Cardiology revealed that feeding rabbits aubergines led to a reduction in cholesterol levels in just four weeks. The study involved dividing the rabbits into three groups.

Two groups were fed a diet supplemented with cholesterol and coconut oil for four weeks, with one of these groups receiving 10 ml of aubergine juice daily during the last two weeks. The researchers noted that the rabbits who received aubergine juice showed significantly lower weight, plasma cholesterol, LDL, triglyceride levels, and aortic cholesterol content compared to the other group.

Furthermore, they found that aubergine juice helped reduce cholesterol levels, weight, and certain concentrations in the arterial wall, while also enhancing endothelium-dependent relaxations in hypercholesterolemic rabbits.

Medical recommendations suggest that a safe total cholesterol reading should typically be five millimoles per liter (mmol/l) or lower. High-density lipoprotein should measure one mmol/l or higher, while low-density lipoprotein should be at four mmol/l or below. A blood sample is usually required by a GP to assess cholesterol levels.

Elevated cholesterol levels can also be linked to inadequate physical activity, smoking, and excessive alcohol consumption. Cheryl advised, “Follow a balanced diet rich in a variety of fruits, vegetables, lean meats, and low-fat foods (especially those with saturated or trans fats). Include wholegrain cereals and pulses in your diet.”

“These foods are high in soluble fiber, which helps lower ‘bad’ cholesterol. Stay physically active. The British Heart Foundation recommends a minimum of 150 minutes of physical activity per week, such as brisk walking or cycling.”

“Being active can boost the levels of ‘good cholesterol’ in your blood, lower blood pressure, and help maintain a healthy weight.” Currently, Tesco is selling aubergines for 95p each. Individuals concerned about their cholesterol levels should seek advice from their healthcare provider.
