A rare and aggressive cancer was discovered in a two-year-old boy when his mother noticed his chest veins had turned blue during bath time. Louisa Shilleto, 37, from Hull, East Yorkshire, observed this alarming change while caring for her son, Charlie. Concerned, Louisa and her husband, Lee, 39, examined Charlie and found a lump under his arm. They immediately took him to the hospital, where tests revealed a large tumor on the left side of his chest, diagnosed as stage four metastatic embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare soft tissue cancer.
Louisa recalled the moment she noticed the blue veins on Charlie’s chest and the sudden appearance of the lump, prompting their hospital visit. After a long wait at Hull Royal Infirmary, another lump was discovered in Charlie’s neck the next morning, causing complications such as a collapsed lung due to the tumor’s pressure. Doctors initiated urgent treatment at Leeds General Infirmary, starting with chemotherapy and high-dose steroids to address the swelling.
Despite the challenges, Charlie responded well to the initial chemotherapy round and is now undergoing further treatment. While the cancer had not spread to his bones, the family remains concerned about potential relapses. The intensive treatment has taken a visible toll on Charlie, with side effects like weight loss, mouth ulcers, and changes in his walking due to nerve issues.
To support the family during this difficult time, a fundraiser launched by Louisa’s sister-in-law has garnered over £17,000. The funds will aid in covering expenses related to Charlie’s treatment, travel to and from Leeds, and creating lasting memories with him. Louisa expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support received through the fundraiser, easing some financial burdens as they focus on Charlie’s care.
