A recent viral incident involving a grizzly bear encounter and new research emphasize the importance of keeping dogs on a leash while hiking. A woman is potentially facing a fine of up to $25,000 for sharing a TikTok video that gained millions of views, showing a man using bear spray to deter a grizzly bear while a small off-leash dog interfered.
The video captured grizzly bear No. 142, a known female bear, peacefully walking along Taylor Lake trail in Banff National Park with no signs of aggression. The woman behind the video is set to appear in court later this month.
A peer-reviewed study titled “The Canine Conundrum: Is a Dog a Help or Hindrance in Bear Country?” delved into similar conflicts involving dogs in human-bear interactions. Analyzing 326 reported conflicts from 1901 to 2023, the study revealed that 54% of conflicts were initiated by dogs. These conflicts resulted in five human fatalities, 56 dog casualties, and 170 human injuries.
The study’s co-author, Lana Ciarniello, highlighted that hiking in a group reduces the likelihood of negative bear encounters by 50%. However, the presence of off-leash dogs significantly increases the risk of such encounters, as dogs introduce unpredictability to recreational activities.
The research was prompted by a tragic incident in 2023 where a grizzly bear in Banff National Park fatally attacked two hikers and their dog. Such human-bear conflicts not only impact individuals and wildlife directly involved but also shape public perception and bear conservation efforts.
The study emphasized the importance of using deterrents, leash regulations, and group hiking to minimize conflict risks. Ciarniello advocated for strict adherence to on-leash dog policies in Canada’s national parks and suggested exploring dog restrictions in critical grizzly habitat areas.
Following a fatal bear attack in the Red Deer Valley area in 2023, Parks Canada experts recommended implementing enhanced dog restrictions in Banff National Park. A report obtained by CBC highlighted the risks associated with dogs in wildlife encounters and emphasized the need for reevaluating existing dog-related policies and regulations.
The report underscored the importance of compliance with leash regulations due to the prevalent lack of adherence, especially as park visitation increases. While the report urged for stricter measures, no immediate changes were made based on its recommendations.
The study also pointed out that the presence of dogs poses a significant risk factor in bear-human interactions, with leash regulations often disregarded despite frequent wildlife encounters in the park. Comparisons with U.S. national parks like Yellowstone, Grand Teton, and Glacier showcased stringent dog restrictions for visitor safety and wildlife protection.
Kim Titchener, founder of Bear Safety & More, emphasized the need for owners to assess their dogs’ behavior around wildlife before venturing into bear habitats. Encountering a bear, Titchener advised individuals to prioritize safety measures such as yielding the trail, carrying bear spray, keeping dogs on a leash, and refraining from filming to ensure a safe outcome.
