Serena and Venus Williams have reunited for the upcoming U.S. Open tournament, securing a wild card entry into the doubles event they have previously won twice. After a four-year hiatus, Serena Williams returned to the tennis scene this summer. The duo was initially set to compete at Wimbledon, but Serena had to withdraw due to a knee injury following a singles match loss. They also participated in the Cincinnati Open, exiting in the first round.

The Williams sisters have a successful history at the U.S. Open, clinching the doubles titles in 1999 and 2009 with a record of 27-7 in nine appearances. Their last match at the event was in 2022, where they were eliminated in the first round. Serena, aged 44, teamed up with Carlos Alcaraz for mixed doubles recently, winning a match before bowing out in the quarterfinals. Meanwhile, 46-year-old Venus is competing in the women’s singles category.

Together, Serena and Venus have amassed an impressive collection of 14 Grand Slam doubles titles and secured Olympic gold medals in 2000, 2008, and 2012. They even held the top spot in the women’s doubles ranking for eight weeks. While Serena opted out of the singles competition at the U.S. Open, she decided to participate in the doubles events, feeling fit enough to do so.

Their first U.S. Open doubles victory coincided with Serena’s inaugural singles triumph at the tournament. The peak of their dominance arrived around a decade later when they triumphed at the Australian Open and Wimbledon in 2009, followed by a second U.S. Open title in the same year. They continued their winning streak in Australia in 2010, clinching the French Open as well, holding all four major trophies simultaneously.

The commencement of the women’s doubles tournament at the U.S. Open is scheduled for September 3rd.
