The wife of a man who ended his own life at Dignitas has penned a letter to the House of Lords urging them to exhibit compassion. Families who have lost loved ones will gather outside the Lords during the significant Second Reading of the Assisted Dying Bill. Louise Shackleton, 58, from North Yorkshire, will be among those hoping for the Lords’ support for the proposals. She emphasized the importance of offering individuals facing uncertain deaths the option to end their suffering on their own terms.

The proposed legislation to legalize assisted dying under specific circumstances in England and Wales has passed initial stages in the House of Commons. It must now undergo the same process in the House of Lords, where any amendments proposed by peers will be reviewed by Members of Parliament. Louise will stand with other families outside the Lords as discussions unfold inside.

Following her husband Anthony’s decision to end his life at Dignitas due to motor neurone disease, Louise has been advocating for the Assisted Dying Bill. In an open letter to the House of Lords, she detailed Anthony’s suffering and highlighted the necessity of providing individuals with the choice to end their pain and suffering in a dignified manner.

The group Dignity in Dying expressed their support for the Assisted Dying Bill, emphasizing the importance of compassion, dignity, and choice at the end of life. They stated that this moment in Parliament is unprecedented, with significant backing from MPs, public support, and momentum for change.

On the opposing side, Dr. Gordon Macdonald, chief executive of Care Not Killing, stressed the need for improved funding for palliative care to ensure individuals can have peaceful and dignified deaths. He emphasized the importance of investing in palliative care services to support those facing terminal illnesses.
