Virgin Media is set to upgrade some of its broadband customers to newer routers for improved performance. The company announced that users still using the older Hub 3 and Hub 4 devices will be eligible for a free upgrade to the more advanced Hub 5, featuring Wi-Fi 6 technology for faster and more reliable connections.
Eligible customers will be notified via email in the coming weeks and months as the rollout progresses throughout 2026. The Hub 5 boasts Wi-Fi 6 technology and seven internal antennas for enhanced coverage within homes.
Virgin Media will contact qualifying customers directly, eliminating the need for proactive action until receiving communication. Users can also verify their eligibility by accessing their My Virgin Media account online.
Checking the router model is simple – examine the sticker on the device’s back or bottom for the model name, or use the Virgin Media Connect app for router identification.
Upgrading to the Hub 5 can enhance broadband experiences significantly, offering wider Wi-Fi coverage, improved stability, and support for future updates. The router is optimized for faster Gig1 speeds, enabling swift downloads and streaming. Gig1 speeds can download a full HD movie in less than 40 seconds, over ten times faster than the UK average.
Wi-Fi 6 is the latest wireless networking technology, delivering faster speeds, enhanced efficiency, and better performance in crowded environments. It accommodates more connected devices simultaneously, operates across both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands efficiently, and is energy-efficient – ideal for modern smart homes with high data demands. While Wi-Fi 7 technology is available, Wi-Fi 6 is suitable for the average user’s needs.
