According to a newly released report by the United Nations Environment Program, the planet is on track to surpass the agreed-upon safe temperature limit set in the 2015 Paris climate agreement due to the impact of fossil fuel consumption. The report highlights the necessity of reducing excessive warming and returning temperatures to the agreed-upon threshold, despite the inevitable increase in weather-related disasters, rising sea levels, species extinction, and melting ice.
United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres stated, “Humanity is surpassing the limit to avert climate catastrophe.” The proposed strategy involves transitioning away from fossil fuels and implementing methods to remove carbon dioxide from industries to achieve a temperature decrease.
The report acknowledges the challenges of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius but emphasizes the importance of taking action. It projects that global temperatures will peak at 1.8 degrees Celsius by mid-century under ambitious climate goals, but current policies could lead to a rise of 2.6 degrees Celsius by 2100.
The United Nations urges policymakers to prepare for a future where the temperature threshold is exceeded and then gradually reduced. The report envisions a trajectory of increased warming, followed by a peak and eventual cooling to below the 1.5 degrees Celsius mark by the end of the century, a scenario referred to as “overshoot.”
Experts stress that while the 1.5 degrees Celsius target remains crucial, efforts must be directed towards achieving it from above. The report warns of the consequences of overshooting the temperature limit, including increased mortality, food shortages, water scarcity, economic downturns, and species extinction.
The need for transformative adaptation to address rising temperatures and financial implications is emphasized in the report. It calls for innovative approaches to land use, infrastructure development, and governance to mitigate the impacts of climate change.
Additionally, the report highlights the risk of reaching irreversible tipping points, such as the loss of ice sheets, rainforests, and disruptions in ocean circulation systems. The final phase of cooling the planet involves removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, with the traditional method of tree planting deemed insufficient. Novel carbon removal strategies will be essential in combating climate change.
