Motorists driving specific vehicle types in a town in the UK will soon encounter higher fees for parking on the streets starting next month. New charges based on emission levels will be implemented for on-street pay and display spaces as well as residential parking permits, beginning on February 2.
The Reading Borough Council shared on Facebook that the fee adjustments are part of their initiative to decrease carbon emissions and enhance air quality in the area for the well-being of residents. The council clarified that the charges will vary depending on the vehicle’s emission rating, starting at 151g/km.
Approximately half of the vehicles are expected to fall into the lowest emission category and will not face any changes, while a quarter will fall into the initial band and experience a slight increase in fees. Off-street parking at residential properties will not be subjected to these new charges. Vehicles, including cars and vans, will be classified into different emissions categories under the revised system.
Even electric, hybrid, and environmentally friendly vehicles will be subject to parking fees, albeit at lower rates compared to more polluting models. The price adjustments will impact only petrol or diesel vehicles emitting over 151g/km of CO2, with six emission bands established ranging from 0 to over 255.
Vehicle owners can check their car’s CO2 emissions by entering the registration number on the DVLA website.
