A recent report suggests that the state pension age in the UK may need to increase to 74 by 2069 to uphold the triple lock promise, as highlighted by the Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS). Concerns arise due to the projected rise in government spending on pensions with an aging population.

Currently, the state pension age for both men and women is gradually increasing from 66 to 68. The triple lock policy ensures that the state pension rises annually by the highest value among inflation, wage growth, or 2.5%. However, without adjustments to the state pension age, the IFS estimates that maintaining the triple lock could cost taxpayers up to £40 billion per year.

In response to these challenges, a proposed alternative is a double lock system that would tie state pension increases to either wage growth or inflation. Chancellor Rachel Reeves has committed to retaining the triple lock until 2029.

The IFS report emphasizes the necessity for significant increases in the state pension age to limit state pension expenditures to a certain percentage of national income. According to official projections, to uphold the triple lock while keeping state pension spending under 6% of national income, the state pension age would need to reach 69 by 2049 and 74 by 2069.

Mike Ambery, Retirement Savings Director at Standard Life, agrees with the report’s findings on the widespread under-saving and gaps in pension provision. He stresses the importance of tailoring solutions to address the diverse needs of different groups, including the self-employed and younger workers.

The state pension age is already set to incrementally rise to 68 between 2044 and 2046, following an increase to 67 between 2026 and 2028. It is essential to note that the state pension is distinct from any private or workplace pension schemes. Individuals can check their state pension age and forecast online to determine their entitlements.

Depending on their birthdate, individuals claim either the new state pension or the basic state pension, with different weekly rates for each. The amount of state pension received is contingent on one’s National Insurance record, with a specified number of qualifying years required to receive the full pension amount.
