Dozens of regions across the UK are bracing for heavy rainfall equivalent to a month’s worth today, leading to potential flooding in some areas. A thunderstorm warning has also been issued.
Residents in southern England and South Wales are expected to experience significant rainfall throughout the morning and afternoon. Rainfall amounts will vary, ranging from 20-30mm in some locations to as high as 40-60mm within six to nine hours.
Notably, Plymouth in Devon usually receives around 72mm of rain in an average September, but today’s forecast predicts nearly 60mm, approaching the monthly average. Similarly, Southampton, under the yellow rain warning, typically sees 60mm of rain in a standard September, with potential severe downpours expected.
The yellow rain warning spans from Cornwall to South Wales, Herefordshire, and down to West and East Sussex. Additionally, a yellow thunderstorm warning covers a large area of southern England to East Anglia. Northeast Scotland is under a separate rain warning, while most of Wales and northern England will be under a 15-hour yellow thunderstorm warning starting tomorrow.
Coastal gales, especially along the English Channel coasts, are anticipated by the Met Office. The forecast includes heavy rain and strong winds moving northeast, followed by showers and isolated thunderstorms.
Today’s downpours are expected to impact 42 areas across 13 counties, with official flood alerts issued for Devon, particularly in the River Axe area. Vulnerable locations such as Axminster and Axmouth have been flagged for potential flooding this morning.
Residents in the 31 areas under the yellow weather warning are advised to prepare a flood plan and emergency kit including essentials like a torch, first aid supplies, medications, bottled water, and a battery-powered radio.
Rain is forecasted for much of the UK in the afternoon, albeit less along the south coast compared to Tuesday. The Met Office projects cloud cover, heavy rain moving northeast, blustery showers, and possible coastal gales, with temperatures remaining near average.
Tonight, conditions are expected to turn drier in most areas except the far southwest, where persistent rain will persist in Shetland. Clear spells will develop overnight, followed by frequent heavy showers moving across the south.
