“UK Inflation Drops to 3% in January, Lowest in a Year”

UK inflation dropped to a 3% in January, reaching its lowest level in nearly a year as the pace of price increases continued to slow. This marked a decline from 3.4% in December, as anticipated by economists. However, the decrease in inflation does not indicate a halt in price hikes, but rather a deceleration in the rate of increase.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) attributed the decline in inflation to reduced petrol and food prices, along with a decrease in airfares. Last year, inflation peaked at 3.8%, with a high of 11.1% in October 2022. The Bank of England anticipates inflation to approach its 2% target by mid-2026.

The recent inflation update has raised expectations of a potential interest rate cut in March, with the base rate currently at 3.75%. Experts suggest that a rate cut in 2026 is likely due to a struggling labor market, weak economic growth, and stable inflation.

Key factors contributing to the decrease in inflation include lower petrol prices and a rise in food and non-alcoholic drink prices by 3.6% in the 12 months leading up to January. The Bank of England aims to maintain inflation at 2% through adjustments in its base rate to influence borrowing costs and consumer spending.

Core inflation, excluding volatile elements such as energy and food, stood at 3.1% in January. The Chancellor emphasized efforts to reduce the cost of living by implementing measures like energy bill reductions and freezing rail fares.

Grant Fitzner, Chief Economist at the ONS, highlighted the significant contributors to the decline in inflation, including lower petrol prices, reduced airfares, and decreased food prices, partially offset by increased costs in hotel stays and takeaways. The ONS tracks inflation based on a basket of goods and services regularly updated to reflect consumer spending patterns.
