Amid global conflicts in regions like Ukraine, Gaza, and Sudan, it is easy to believe that such turmoil is far from our shores. However, the UK is currently engaged in a covert conflict with Russia. While physical attacks may not be evident on our streets, a more discreet battle is underway.

Russian actions include the deployment of spy ships to target and disrupt undersea cables crucial for internet and power transmission, as well as incidents like firing lasers at RAF aircraft and interfering with GPS signals on UK vessels. The 2018 assassination of Dawn Sturgess in Salisbury by Russian operatives serves as a grim reminder of the ongoing hostilities.

On a daily basis, the UK faces cyber threats from Russia, with ransomware groups associated with the Kremlin actively targeting the country. There are concerns that future attacks could aim to disrupt critical infrastructure such as the electricity grid and transportation networks, as warned by the UK Government.

While the conflict in Ukraine appears static on the surface, Russia is pursuing a broader agenda beyond territorial gains. The ultimate aim is not just to acquire land but to subdue the Ukrainian people and erode their way of life. Furthermore, Russia’s ambitions extend beyond Ukraine to challenge democratic values and freedoms globally. This conflict is not about land expansion but about autocracy suppressing democracy—a battle that must not be lost.

Key to any potential peace agreement with Ukraine is a robust security guarantee. In 1994, the UK, the US, and France pledged to safeguard Ukraine’s security and independence, with Russia agreeing not to resort to military force against Ukraine in exchange for Ukraine relinquishing its nuclear arsenal. However, Russia violated this pact in 2014, prompting a more proactive response from Western allies in 2022, including the provision of military aid to Ukraine.

Ukraine now demands stronger security assurances in any ceasefire deal with Russia, potentially involving the deployment of NATO troops within its borders to deter further aggression. With NATO forces already stationed in countries like Estonia and along the Russian border, the commitment to defend allies against Russian threats remains paramount.

While hoping for a swift ceasefire, it is crucial to demonstrate unwavering resolve against Russian aggression. The UK must be prepared to enforce its position firmly and show Russia that it will not yield to hostile actions.

As a supporter of the music industry and local music scenes, the impact of upcoming changes in business rates relief on music venues and studios is concerning. The withdrawal of this relief, starting in April 2026, poses a threat to the thriving music ecosystem in the UK, risking closures of essential venues and studios. Urgent action is needed to sustain these vital components of the music industry and preserve jobs and opportunities.

The recent imprisonment of former Welsh Reform UK leader Nathan Gill for accepting pro-Russian bribes highlights the pernicious influence of financial interests in politics. Calls for stricter regulations on donations and campaign spending are essential to ensure that political power remains with the electorate rather than vested interests.

Looking ahead to 2026, the Renters Right Act promises to enhance tenant protections and bridge the gap between renters and homeowners. Legislative measures like limiting advance rent payments and regulating letting practices are steps towards reducing disparities in the housing market and promoting fairness for all renters.
