The United Kingdom has acquired a cutting-edge weapon capable of firing eight rounds per minute while traveling at speeds of up to 100km/h. This innovative weapon, known as the RCH 155, is mounted on a BOXER armored vehicle and can engage targets up to 70km away. Through a £52 million agreement between the UK and Germany, the RCH 155 provides a significant enhancement to British military capabilities, drawing insights from the conflict in Ukraine.

Featuring groundbreaking technology, the RCH 155 has a range of 700km without the need for refueling, equivalent to the distance from Cornwall to Newcastle. Unlike traditional artillery systems that require halting to set up before firing, this rapid weapon can engage targets while in motion, making it a swift and elusive threat for adversaries. Operated by a minimal crew of two individuals due to advanced automation, the weapon can target in any direction without repositioning.

Minister for Defence Readiness and Industry, Luke Pollard MP, emphasized the upcoming deployment of new artillery for the British Army that can engage targets while on the move, leveraging lessons learned from Ukraine. The ability to strike targets 70km away swiftly and maneuver away from counter-fire highlights the importance of agility and rapid response in modern conflicts, shaping procurement decisions based on real-world experiences.

Currently, soldiers operate 14 Archer artillery systems as an interim solution following the transfer of AS90 guns to Ukraine. The collaboration between the UK and Germany under the contract involves sharing test data and facilities to ensure both nations benefit from state-of-the-art equipment.

Edward Cutts, Senior Responsible Owner of Mobile Fires in the Army, praised the cooperative effort with Germany in the joint demonstrator program, showcasing the effectiveness and ambition of the Trinity House Agreement. The RCH 155 represents a significant advancement in mobile artillery, blending potent firepower with quick repositioning capabilities, enhancing the operational effectiveness of soldiers and fostering interoperability between UK and German forces crucial for NATO’s collective defense.

In recent developments, Defence Secretary John Healey reaffirmed the UK’s commitment to supporting Ukraine against threats, highlighting ongoing investments to mobilize British troops promptly in case of a peace agreement. This statement follows the launch of a new military intelligence service in response to escalating cyber-attacks, disinformation campaigns, and threats to global shipping routes.
