The recent aggression by Israeli settlers on Palestinian homes in the village of Qusra in the occupied West Bank is not an isolated event. However, the presence of a U.S. citizen among the Palestinian homeowners has garnered more attention than the frequent acts of aggression by hardline Jewish settlers aimed at displacing Palestinians from their land.
Loui Ridi, a businessman from Ohio, returned to Qusra on August 17 to protect his home, along with his brother and nephew residing there, as settlers surrounded it along with two neighboring homes. Ridi expressed concern that leaving the house would risk the settlers taking over his property.
Ridi highlighted a similar incident in a neighboring village two months prior, where settlers besieged a family and eventually forced them out of their home. The growth of Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank, deemed illegal under international law, has expanded notably under the current administration of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his ultranationalist coalition partners, who are criticized for allegedly endorsing settler violence.
Upon his return to Qusra, Ridi raised an American flag on his building and sought assistance from the U.S. Embassy. Qusra, located approximately 16 kilometers south of Nablus, is encompassed by settlement blocs and outposts occupied by radical settlers. Incidents of settler attacks resulting in casualties or property damage have increased this year, averaging about six incidents daily, according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.
The violence in Qusra prompted a condemnation from U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee, who labeled the perpetrators as “Israeli terrorists.” Huckabee, a staunch supporter of Israel’s settlement policy, dismissed violent settlers as a minority. However, critics argue that this overlooks the broader issue of what they perceive as a de facto annexation of the West Bank through escalating violence.
In response to the situation in Qusra, Israeli border police and units from the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) were deployed to restore order and remove settlers blockading Palestinian homes. Despite IDF intervention, concerns persist among Palestinians that the IDF’s presence may be facilitating Israel’s settlement expansion.
The ongoing violence near the outskirts of Palestinian communities, like in Qusra, is part of a broader strategy to restrict Palestinian living spaces and facilitate the connection of settlement blocs and outposts across the West Bank. This approach aims to push Palestinians into smaller areas while expanding settlements on a larger scale.
International condemnation of Israel’s settlement activities, including the recent decision to publish construction tenders for a new settlement near East Jerusalem, underscores the ongoing challenges to the two-state solution and territorial contiguity of Palestinian territories.
