U.S. President Donald Trump undertook a covert military journey from Turkey recently, necessitated by an Iranian threat of assassination. The operation involved a maneuver where Trump was transferred between aircraft using a catering truck, unbeknownst to many. While the official statement from the White House indicated that Trump was flying on Air Force One from Turkey to Britain after attending a NATO summit, reports revealed that moments after boarding the plane, Trump made a discreet exit via the catering truck and boarded a different aircraft for the journey to Britain.
Confirming the incident, Trump disclosed that the Secret Service and military recommended his switch to a different plane due to a security threat, which he asserted did not intimidate him. Trump acknowledged the situation during his return from an event in Ohio, emphasizing that the decision was made by the security personnel. He downplayed the perceived risk to the individuals left on the initial plane, including White House officials, security personnel, support staff, and journalists.
Trump shared that he had limited involvement in the decision as security concerns were cited for the aircraft switch. Despite the threat, Trump stated that he did not delve into the details, remarking that he receives numerous threats regularly.
The change of planes raised security queries, especially after Trump opted to use an older Air Force One instead of a newly renovated jet donated by Qatar for his departure from Ankara following the NATO summit. The decision to switch planes stirred speculation about the security of the newer aircraft, particularly as tensions heightened with Iran, Turkey’s neighboring country.
Before leaving Ankara, Trump announced his choice of using the older baby blue Air Force One for the journey to RAF Mildenhall in Britain, citing nostalgia. Meanwhile, the new plane stopped at the same base to allow U.S. service members stationed there to tour the aircraft. Journalists traveling with Trump on the older Air Force One, which served as a decoy, were instructed to keep their window shades closed in the press cabin.
According to reports, apart from the journalists, some White House staff were under the impression that Trump was on the older plane. When questioned by reporters about the need to keep the shades shut during the flight, Trump attributed it to safety concerns, indicating that the flight might have posed risks. He jokingly remarked, “But if I go, you go. Right?”
