A horse trainer has responded to criticism following the loss of a beloved 17-time winning racehorse from his stable. Michael Mullineaux expressed sadness over the passing of Peachey Carnehan, a cherished member of the yard set to retire alongside other former racers.

Despite some fans suggesting that Mullineaux should have retired the 11-year-old sprinter earlier due to a decline in performance, the trainer defended his decision, mentioning that he had believed Peachey Carnehan was ready for another victory. Tragically, during his 169th race at Leicester, the horse suffered a fatal injury.

Mullineaux revealed that efforts were made to save Peachey Carnehan upon returning to the stables, but a severe fracture proved irreparable. Emphasizing the care given to their horses, Mullineaux highlighted the dedication to finding them good homes post-racing.

The racehorse, owned by 80-year-old Keith Jones, was a beloved figure at the yard, where he received treats and attention from his owner. Following the decision to lay him to rest on the gallops, a memorial bench will be placed in his honor.

Expressing deep affection for their horses, Mullineaux shared the story of another retired racehorse living happily on their premises. He emphasized that their care for the horses goes beyond financial gains, recounting Peachey Carnehan’s lively and spirited nature.

The British Horseracing Authority confirmed that the incident would undergo review, standard procedure for all racecourse fatalities.
