A 31-year-old father, Sam Buchan from Fraserburgh in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, tragically passed away after suffering a heat stroke-induced cardiac arrest during a triathlon swim in Swansea. The incident occurred on a scorching mid-July day with temperatures exceeding 28C. Sam was rescued from the water by a safety boat during the Ironman event and provided with immediate medical assistance, including resuscitation efforts.
Despite receiving treatment at the event’s medical tent, Sam was later transferred to Moriston Hospital in Swansea where he sadly succumbed to the effects of exertional heat stroke, leading to cardiac arrest. The post-mortem examination confirmed the cause of his death. The assistant coroner, Swansea Colin Phillips, has adjourned the hearing for a full inquest scheduled for March 18 next year.
Known as a beloved husband, father, son, brother, and friend, Sam was described by his family as a cherished individual. The Ironman competition involved a challenging course, including a 1.2-mile swim and a 56-mile bike ride through picturesque landscapes in Swansea.
Ironman Wales expressed their condolences, acknowledging the swift response of the event’s safety personnel and first responders. They emphasized their support for Sam’s family and friends during this difficult time.
