A retired nurse named Kathleen Devine tragically lost her life after being stung by bees while collecting honey in Co. Mayo, Ireland. Kathleen, in her seventies, and her husband Des, passionate beekeepers, were assisting friends with honey harvesting near their Ballycastle residence when the bees turned aggressive and attacked. Kathleen was stung by two bees, leading to a severe allergic reaction. The Irish Coast Guard helicopter rushed to the scene, providing immediate medical attention before airlifting her to Sligo University Hospital. Despite efforts to save her, Kathleen passed away.
Reports indicate that the incident occurred while the Devines were helping friends with honey extraction. A source mentioned that the bees, protective of their honey during this time of the year, caused the unfortunate event. The source clarified that it was not a bee swarm but rather a hive that was the source of the bees’ aggression. Even though Kathleen was wearing protective gear, the bees managed to penetrate her suit, resulting in the fatal outcome.
Authorities confirmed their involvement, stating that Gardai assisted emergency services during the medical incident involving Kathleen in Ballycastle. She was airlifted to Sligo General Hospital where she later succumbed to the bee stings. Another individual who provided help was also hospitalized for non-life-threatening injuries. A post-mortem examination will be conducted to determine the circumstances surrounding Kathleen’s death, with the local Coroner informed of the situation.
