The Toronto Tempo, a WNBA team, recently introduced their new mascots during a game, but the reception from fans has been mixed. Dez the snapping turtle and Dot the Arctic hare, inspired by Aesop’s fable, symbolize different paces and are the official mascots of Canada’s only WNBA franchise.

Dez, hailing from Muskoka, is a calm music lover who enjoys soft-shell tacos and is a Taurus. On the other hand, Dot, representing Toronto (“T-Dot”), brings high energy, a love for cotton candy, and a passion for the Netflix F1 series “Drive to Survive” as a Gemini. Their unique bond formed when Dot followed the northern lights to Dez’s territory, realizing their perfect match.

The Tempo described their connection as a shared love of rhythm, each bringing distinct qualities to the partnership. Despite their harmonious union, some fans have criticized the mascots’ design and backstory, comparing them unfavorably to other more established mascots like the Toronto Raptors’ Raptor.

While some find the mascots’ faces unsettling, others appreciate the tortoise and hare dynamic, praising the imagery. Speculation about the mascots’ relationship and sexuality has also surfaced, with TSN reporter Chelsea Leite clarifying that Dez and Dot are simply best friends, not siblings or romantic partners.

The Tempo, currently struggling in their inaugural season with a 10–25 record and a 12-game losing streak, face challenges on the court. Their recent defeat to the Washington Mystics ended their playoff hopes, adding pressure on the team and their new mascots to lift spirits among fans.
