A recent survey reveals that British citizens are calling for Keir Starmer to adopt a more critical stance towards Donald Trump, expressing concerns about the potential negative impact of Trump’s second term on the UK. Despite Prime Minister’s amicable interactions with the US President, including lavish gifts and compliments, and an exceptional second state visit scheduled for October, only 20% of respondents believe that Trump’s reelection would benefit the UK.
The survey conducted by Deltapoll shows that 43% of participants anticipate detrimental consequences for the UK in Trump’s second term, while 27% believe there will be no significant change. Nearly half of the respondents (47%) expressed a desire for Starmer to display more critical views towards Trump publicly, with 15% holding an opposing opinion.
Starmer’s decision to pursue a preliminary trade deal with the Trump administration was met with mixed reactions, with some urging him to take a firmer stance against Trump. Calls for Starmer to stand up to Trump have intensified, particularly in response to Trump’s threats to sue the BBC for $1 billion over editing claims and his potential support for far-right European candidates.
During a recent Prime Minister’s Questions session, Sir Ed Davey of the Liberal Democrats urged Starmer to convey that any attempts by Trump to interfere with UK democracy are unacceptable. In response, Starmer emphasized the importance of a united Europe supporting values of freedom and democracy.
The survey, conducted online by interviewing 1,997 British adults between December 16th and 18th, 2025, has been statistically adjusted to reflect the overall British adult population.
