A recent survey found that more than a third of glasses-wearing Brits engage in sports without optimal vision. Out of 2,000 adults surveyed with nearsightedness or farsightedness, 42% admitted to making errors or misjudging distances while participating in sports without their glasses. Shockingly, one in ten individuals even sustained injuries due to their impaired vision.

The study revealed that over half (52%) of respondents avoid wearing their glasses during sports for fear of breakage, with 44% concerned about them falling off during activity, and 32% citing issues with slippage caused by sweat. Only 37% feel confident that their glasses would stay secure during sports activities, with 29% feeling restricted in their enjoyment due to wearing glasses.

A significant number (33%) reported feeling anxious when wearing glasses in active or risky situations where they could potentially fall off. Giles Edmonds, clinical services director at Specsavers, emphasized the commonality of this issue, noting that glasses are more susceptible to damage during sports, leading people to opt out of wearing them entirely.

Common outcomes of damaged glasses during physical activity include broken or bent frames, scratched lenses, and stretched or broken arms. Interestingly, the research also indicated that 64% of individuals have broken their glasses outside of sports, with common causes being accidental dropping, sitting on them, or falling asleep while wearing them.

Of those who experienced damage, 69% attempted DIY repairs such as replacing screws, twisting frames, or using superglue, although 42% admitted these efforts were unsuccessful. Edmonds suggested contact lenses as a more practical solution for maintaining optimal vision during sports due to their ability to move with the eyes, eliminating restrictions on peripheral vision.

He highlighted that daily disposable contact lenses are particularly suitable for sports as they are fresh, hygienic, and easily replaceable if lost or damaged. This recommendation aims to address concerns related to fogging, slippage due to sweat, and breakage during contact sports, providing a hassle-free experience for sports enthusiasts.
