Strictly Come Dancing champion Chris McCausland has shared his harrowing experience of being mugged at knifepoint during his youth. The 48-year-old actor and stand-up comedian, who emerged victorious on Strictly last season, delves into this frightening incident in his latest autobiography, reflecting on his teenage years in Liverpool.

In his newly released book, Chris recounts his upbringing where his parents always encouraged him to explore the world without holding him back due to their own fears. Despite the traumatic event of being mugged with a knife, Chris cherishes the valuable life experiences it has provided him over the years.

Blind from a genetic condition, Chris narrates how he and his best friend Neil encountered two assailants one night. Attempting to outsmart them by walking faster, they were soon held at knifepoint in a shop doorway. Despite the danger, Chris managed to negotiate with the muggers, offering only loose change before a bystander’s intervention prompted the culprits to flee with a small sum of cash.

Maintaining his resilient spirit, Chris refused to let the mugging dampen his evening and continued enjoying his night out with friends. He decided to keep the incident under wraps to avoid his parents becoming overly protective, believing that revealing the ordeal might alter their perception of his independence.

In addition to the mugging incident, Chris discusses his unexpected triumph on Strictly in his book. Despite skepticism from those around him, including friends, family, and even his postman, Chris defied expectations and clinched the show’s top spot. His humorous anecdotes shed light on the challenges he faced as a visually impaired contestant navigating the dance competition.

Chris’ book, “Keep Laughing,” published by Michael Joseph, is now available for readers to explore his captivating journey.
