These impactful weather maps reveal the areas that are likely to experience heavy rain and storms on Sunday.

As reported yesterday, a band of low pressure is expected to move across parts of the UK towards the end of the weekend. Initially thought to affect mainly the Southeast and East of England, updated model charts now indicate that England, Wales, and Northern Ireland will face the brunt of the inclement weather, with the heaviest rainfall predicted for Wales and Southwest England, particularly in rural areas like Carmarthenshire where over 20mm of rain could fall within a few hours.

The most intense downpours are anticipated in Wales and Southwest England, with wind speeds reaching up to 50mph along the west coast of Wales by 4 pm on Sunday as the low-pressure system progresses northeastward from the Atlantic throughout the morning.

By around 7 pm, most parts of the UK are expected to experience either showers or heavy rainfall as the low-pressure system gradually advances. While thunder and lightning were initially forecasted to be prevalent on Sunday, the latest weather models suggest that storms may not be as widespread.

Meteorologists predict that parts of the south coast, such as Devon and Dorset, could see some storms in the evening, with isolated storms likely in rural areas of Wiltshire, Gloucestershire, and Worcestershire later on. The heaviest rainfall, expected around 10 pm or 11 pm, is anticipated in North Yorkshire as the expansive low-pressure system extends northeastward.

Showers are forecasted to persist into Monday morning, predominantly along the south coast, as the low-pressure system becomes entrenched and difficult to disperse. This marks a significant shift from the warm but foggy conditions witnessed earlier in the week, with temperatures expected to drop to around 10°C during the Sunday storm, although the Southwest of England may see slightly higher temperatures despite being one of the areas most affected by the heavy rainfall.

The Met Office states on its website that conditions will become more unsettled from Sunday onwards, with wind and rain approaching as a low-pressure system from the Atlantic traverses eastward across the UK.
