Keir Starmer has accused Donald Trump of attempting to exert pressure on him regarding Greenland by criticizing the Chagos deal, which the US President had previously approved. The Prime Minister engaged with Members of Parliament during his first Prime Minister’s Questions following Donald Trump’s recent inflammatory comments and threats directed at the UK.

At the onset of the session, the PM highlighted his extensive conversations with global allies in recent days, emphasizing his commitment to resolving ongoing issues. In a notable rebuke to the US President, Starmer criticized Trump for targeting the Chagos deal to compel the UK to align with his views on Greenland’s future. Starmer emphasized that Trump’s disparagement of the agreement was a deliberate tactic to apply pressure on the UK and himself.

Donald Trump’s recent social media posts lambasting the UK’s Chagos deal as an “act of GREAT STUPIDITY” despite his prior approval further escalated tensions. Starmer firmly rejected Trump’s threats of imposing tariffs over disagreements on Greenland, emphasizing the UK’s unwavering stance on its values and principles.

The PM reiterated that attempts by the US to pressure NATO allies on Greenland were inappropriate. Starmer affirmed that Britain would not compromise its values under the threat of tariffs, emphasizing the importance of upholding principles amidst international disputes.

The session also saw discussions on other issues, including the case of murdered prison officer Lenny Scott and the expulsion of MP Richard Holden from the Commons following a remark made by Starmer. The ongoing diplomatic challenges with the US, particularly regarding Greenland, remained a focal point of the parliamentary debate.

The escalating tensions between the UK and the US, fueled by Trump’s aggressive rhetoric and threats of tariffs, have added complexity to international relations. The PM’s unwavering stance on key issues such as Greenland reflects a commitment to upholding national interests and values despite external pressures.
