The cost of the standard TV Licence fee went up to £174.50 in April 2025, affecting many individuals. This fee is necessary for households or businesses that watch live television or utilize the BBC iPlayer. However, there are circumstances where certain individuals could be eligible for a free or discounted licence. For instance, those owning black-and-white TV sets typically face an annual cost of £58.50 under the licensing system.

Government guidelines state that individuals over 75 years old receiving Pension Credit qualify for a free TV Licence. This eligibility extends to partners living at the same address as the credit recipient. It is crucial to differentiate Pension Credit from the State Pension, as the former is a means-tested benefit for individuals over State Pension age with low income.

Individuals receiving Pension Credit can apply for a free TV Licence at age 74, but payment is required until the end of the month before turning 75. Likewise, people who are blind or residing in residential care can seek a reduced-cost TV Licence. Residents in residential care facilities can have housing managers apply on their behalf, while blind individuals or those living with them can secure a 50% discount on their TV Licence.

Applying for a free TV Licence can be done online or by phone for individuals aged 75 and over receiving Pension Credit. Those registered blind can also apply on the TV Licensing website. For further details, visit GOV.UK or the official TV Licensing website.

In 2024, a 2.9% price increase was announced by the Secretary of State, effective from April 1, 2025, in alignment with annual CPI inflation. This adjustment raised the annual colour licence fee to £174.50 and the black-and-white licence fee to £58.50 per year. Future licence fee increases will be tied to CPI inflation until 2027.
